Health sciences librarians are called upon to teach regularly as a part of their daily work life. Instruction isn’t just limited to teaching a course; however, it could be as simple as effectively answering chat reference, email, or phone call, doing a short consultation for a researcher, highlighting apps on clinical rounds, or lecturing to a hall full of medical students or nurses. This webinar is designed for new and “new-to-teaching” librarians and will provide an overview of how to structure all kinds of teaching encounters, including writing objectives for formal sessions, methods to keep in-person and online lectures engaging and interesting, and tricks for supporting distance learning.

Megan von Isenburg, MSLS, AHIP, is Associate Director for Research and Education and Liaison to both Global Health and Graduate Medical Education at Duke University Medical Center Library. Megan designs and delivers instruction to students, faculty and staff, including numerous “one-shot” sessions in a variety of settings, from grand rounds to journal clubs. Megan is also a co-director of a 6-week, credit bearing course for medical students and the annual Duke University Teaching and Leading EBM Workshop. Since joining the Duke staff 10 years ago, Megan has completed a graduate certificate in e-learning and participated in as much teaching continuing education as possible, including the ACRL Immersion program.
