Building Mosaic ’16 with 549 Abstracts

By Amy Chatfield, Section Council Liaison; Anne Seymour, Cochair, and Jeff Mason, Cochair, 2016 Joint Planning Committee

549_abstracts_300.jpg“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”—Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman

This quote encapsulates  how authors responded to the launch of the new call for submission process for Mosaic ’16. The Joint Planning Committee was thrilled to receive 549 abstracts. That’s the highest number ever! Further evidence that health sciences librarians are fired up to present their papers, posters, or lightning talks and “Be Part of the Big Picture” in Toronto, May 13–18, 2016.

While planning for MLA ’16, we recognized that CHLA/ABSC’s model for contributed content offered an opportunity to elevate the content at this joint meeting. The new submission process encourages attendees to submit the work that they think is most important. Papers will be evaluated based on merit, not on how well they match a predetermined theme. Evaluating abstracts in this way helps support MLA’s research goal (strategic priority 5), by ensuring that quality research and impactful projects are front and center at our annual meeting.

Authors also ranked their preference to present their content as a paper, poster, or lightning talk. Abstracts not accepted to the first choice format are considered for second and third choice formats.

The submission numbers broke down as follows:

  • Papers: 378 submissions listed paper as a first choice. Each paper session at Mosaic ’16 will be 85 minutes long. Papers will be “aligned” timewise so attendees can move between rooms and not miss content.
  • Posters: 193 submissions listed poster as a first choice.
  • Lightning talks: 37 submissions listed lightning talks as a first choice. In early 2016, a call will be issued for abstracts for additional lightning talks, to capture ideas and projects begun after the September submission deadline.
  • Special content sessions: 26 applications were submitted.
  • Approximately 200 reviewers have agreed to participate.

Each abstract will be reviewed by 3 separate reviewers. Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified by November 30.  All special content session applications will also be reviewed by three separate reviewers. The contacts identified in special content session applications will be notified of acceptance by November 30. In early 2016, all accepted authors and contacts for special content sessions will be notified of the precise day and time of their presentation.

A big thank you to all the authors and reviewers!

Another improvement is that CHLA/ABSC and MLA decided to merge MLA’s awards luncheon, president’s reception, and closing banquet into a single, spectacular event on Tuesday, May 17. CHLA/ABSC will present its awards and celebrate its 40th anniversary during this time as well. The change frees up time for you to have lunch on your own with exhibitors and allows time for a third poster session, so you can have access to even more quality content from your colleagues.
