Adventure to Atlanta Part 2: Then Suddenly Librarians!

I arrived early at the Atlanta airport. After taking the MARTA train to Peach Tree Center, the first thing I noticed was the high walkways connecting all the buildings. They reminded me of hamster tubes because there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to their design. They just looked fun. I checked into the Radius Tower at the Hyatt and got settled before going to the Braves game.

As I mentioned in the previous chapter I was a little nervous because I arrived alone, and my colleagues were coming the next day. However, those fears immediately dissipated because everyone I met on the way to the game was great, and coincidently, I sat among a bunch of people from New Jersey. It was a great beginning to MLA, even if I nearly missed the bus ride back.

SO much has happened during the conference so I will highlight 3 conference activities:

  1. The first timer breakfast was great. I got to meet so many new people, and their speed dating style ice-breaker was remarkably effective. We all awkwardly rushed around looking for a new discussion partner, and it was that awkward rush which brought us together and made discussion easy. If you plan on going next year this is a must.
  2. The CE course on being a good liaison to health professions was such an engaging and interesting course. The two instructors did an amazing job and I left with a full plan for the next year.
  3. Though the range of topics and sessions was overwhelming, it is so easy to find out something new and be engaged with the presentations. Despite not knowing where I would go I quickly found talks which interested me and helped me build a foundation as a new health sciences librarian.

In the next blog post, I will provide the keys lessons from MLA as I look back on it nearly a month out. To be continued...
