On Tuesday, May 22, the director of the National Library of Medicine, Dr. Patricia Flatley Brennan delivered an update on what the NLM has accomplished over the last year and what is in the pipeline for the next year. The talk focused on the new NLM strategic plan for 2017-2027 titled A Platform for Biomedical Discovery and Data-Powered Health. The plan can be broken down into three main goals:
Accelerate discovery and advance health through data-driven research
The NLM recognizes the importance of breaking down barriers between data resources and plans to develop a strategy based on Open Science.
Reach more people in more ways through enhanced dissemination and engagement
With the rise in data-driven health, the NLM needs to develop new ways to deliver trusted health information to patients to help them make educated decisions about their health.
Build a workforce for data-driven research and health
The NLM plans to partner with library and information schools to recruit more graduates to data and medical librarianship. It also plans to develop and provide more learning opportunities for librarians interested in developing skills in data science.
