Dr. David Satcher is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, and went on to study Medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, earning both an MD and a Ph.D.
President Bill Clinton appointed Dr. Satcher the 16th Surgeon General from 1998-2002, following his stint as Assistant Secretary for Health & Human Services. As Surgeon General, he focused on improving access to healthcare and the issues of obesity and suicide prevention. Dr. Satcher also served as a Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 1993 to 1998.
He has held top leadership positions at the Charles Drew University for Medicine and Science, Meharry Medical College and Morehouse School of Medicine. He holds over 50 honorary degrees and numerous other awards.
Currently, he is the founding director and senior advisor for the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. The Institute develops diverse, exceptional health leaders who are focused on disease prevention, mental health, sexual health, the health needs of underserved communities and global health equity.
Dr. Satcher is a visionary leader and his lecture on Wednesday at 10:30AM will certainly inform and complement the theme of MLA 18: Adapting, Transforming, Leading.
