MLA’s four-part series on instructional design helps novice and experienced teachers and course designers be more effective in how they design, deliver and evaluate their face-to-face and online instruction. What’s Theory Got to Do with It? Learning Theories, Instructional Design, and the Librarian

Explore common (and not so common) learning theories, how they’ve influenced us and how we can use them to design our teaching.

After attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • define instructional design and learning theory
  • distinguish among the schools of learning theory
  • identify and adapt a theory that best fits their values and students
  • draft an instructional plan using a learning theory


Rebecca Graves, AHIP, is the educational services librarian at the J. Otto Lottes Health Sciences Library at the University of Missouri–Columbia, as well as an adjunct faculty member for health management and informatics. Graves has partnered with faculty in the School of Nursing and the Departments of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy to work on integrating library instruction and evidence-based searching into the curriculum. In addition to two decades of teaching experience, Graves has published several chapters on teaching and given multiple talks on presentation skills. She received her master’s of library science from the State University of New York–Buffalo.


Designing Online Instruction: It’s Not Just for Distance Education Anymore

This webinar will teach you new and exciting ways to create online instructional materials for distance, blended, or even face-to-face sessions. The first part of the session will focus on defining different types of online instructional materials and strategies, while the second half will focus on “Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation” (ADDIE) and software programs for creating online videos.

After attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • describe several categories of online instruction
  • explain the importance of designing online materials for a variety of audiences
  • develop a plan for designing online instructional materials using ADDIE
  • list several software programs for creating online videos


Amy Blevins currently works at the Ruth Lilly Medical Library as the associate director for public services. From 2007–2010, she served as the education and instructional technologies librarian at East Carolina University’s Laupus Library, where she oversaw the creation of online instructional materials to support distance education programs. During that time, she earned a certificate in distance learning and administration. Before coming to Indiana, Blevins served as the liaison to the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa, where she developed a longitudinal curriculum-integrated series of classes for undergraduate medical students. She is the coeditor of the book Curriculum-Based Library Instruction and has over a decade of experience with teaching in academic health sciences libraries.


Don’t Flip Out! Exploring Team-Based Learning

This webinar will explore the fundamentals of team-based learning (TBL), a small group–based instructional strategy. Participants will learn the framework of traditional TBL as well as gain more in-depth information on the essential elements of TBL, including group formation, accountability, feedback, and assignment creation. Some typical examples of how TBL is being executed in health profession education courses will be highlighted, with more time dedicated to how TBL is more likely to be done in library instruction. Participants will learn how TBL differs from problem-based learning (PBL) and other flipped classroom techniques and how they might be able to pull in TBL elements into their next instructional opportunity.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • explain the fundamentals of TBL, including the four essential principles
  • identify the benefits and challenges of TBL for librarians
  • understand the importance of the individual and group readiness assessments as well as the team assignment
  • be able to think about a standard library instruction session through the TBL lens 

tuttle.jpgBrandi Tuttle, AHIP, is a research & education librarian at the Duke University Medical Center Library and serves as liaison to the Physician Assistants and the Pathologists’ Assistants Programs. She has used the TBL approach in many classes with medical students, physician assistant students, and physical therapy students. She has attended workshops led by Larry Michaelsen, creator of TBL; presented at MLA’s annual meeting and the Triangle Research Libraries Network’s annual conference on the application of TBL; and coauthored the “Team-Based Learning” chapter in the book, Curriculum-Based Library Instruction. She has over a decade of experience teaching in academic health sciences libraries and eagerly seeks out new ways to engage her students. Tuttle received her master of science in library and information science degree from the University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign and went through the State Library of North Carolina’s master trainer program in 2009.


Setting Yourself Up for Success with Learning Assessment

A crucial component of instructional design is assessing the effectiveness of the instruction. This webinar will present a variety of approaches to assessing learning. Topics include selection of an assessment strategy based on learning outcomes, the kinds of evidence that are desired, and resources available to support assessment, development of assessment methods and tools, and analysis and use of the results.

After attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • identify the facets of understanding most aligned with an instructional design
  • be able to choose among and/or sequence formative and summative assessment activities
  • develop assessment approaches, methods, and tools
  • analyze and use results for instructional improvement


Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe is professor, University Library, and coordinator for information literacy services and instruction at the University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign, as well as an adjunct faculty member in the university’s library school. When she was president of the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), ACRL launched the Value of Academic Libraries Initiative. She has presented and published widely on information literacy, teaching and learning, the value of academic libraries and library assessment, evaluation, and innovation. Hinchliffe is also the lead designer with Debra Gilchrist for ACRL’s training program for the Standards for Libraries in Higher Education and the Institute of Museum and Library Services–funded Assessment in Action project. One of her most recent publications is the coedited book, Environments for Student Growth and Development: Libraries and Student Affairs in Collaboration (ACRL; 2012). Hinchliffe received her master of education and master of library and information science degrees from the University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, MN.
