Independent Reading Program
MLA Introduces Independent Reading ProgramThe Continuing Education Committee (CEC) introduced the Independent Reading Program (IRP) in 2005. This program allows medical librarians and health information professionals to read selected articles in the Journal of the Medical Library Association (JMLA), complete an online article analysis, and receive MLA continuing education (CE) contact hours. In 2008, the CEC expanded the program to include self-selected professional journal articles. Articles approved for contact hours are marked with the IRP icon on the JMLA table of contents, and the article, and listed on MLANET. Self-selected professional journal articles must fall within one or more of the professional competencies from MLA's educational policy statement, Competencies for Lifelong Learning and Professional Success. Participants will receive 1 MLA CE contact hour for every article completed for the special member fee of $15.00. For membership in MLA's Academy of Health Information Professionals, a maximum of three contact hours per year from the IRP can be applied toward an academy application or renewal, totaling no more than fifteen contact hours per five-year credentialing period. For more information on the program or to access recent articles in the JMLA, go to the Independent Reading Program Index. |
