MLA CE Institute
Developing Web-Based Instruction
March 12-17, 2006
Cosponsored by the Greater Midwest Region,
National Network of Libraries of Medicine (GMR, NN/LM)
Goals
The goal of this institute is to provide education and
support to MLA-approved instructors for transferring their face-to-face
classroom continuing education (CE) courses to a Web-based environment,
expanding CE availability to a broader MLA audience and other health sciences
librarians around the world.
Objectives
At the end of this institute, participants will have:
- an increased knowledge of instructional development
theories and best practices
- an improved understanding of adult learning principles
applied to Web-based CE instruction
- a greater understanding of the differences among
teaching Web-based CE, classroom CE, and academic instruction and the
ability to apply this knowledge to the development of an online course
- exposure to a variety of technologies and Web course
tools for use in developing an MLA-approved Web-based course
- a fully designed strategy for a Web-based CE course
with a goal of 50% of the content developed and a timeline for completing
and testing of the course within the next 6-month period
- familiarity with methods, practices, and processes
for evaluating Web-based learning resources
- exposure to formative and summative student assessment
measures - before, during and after the course
- knowledge about MLA's requirements and procedures
for accreditation of Web-based courses
Mentored Courses
For this institute, Scholars will learn to apply instructional
design principles and practices to transform traditional face-to-face
continuing education experiences into richer, more learner-centered online
courses. The Institute faculty will emphasize mentored courses and will
not focus on self-paced Web instruction or Web tutorials.
During the Institute, faculty will emphasize course organization
and logistics, interactivity, facilitative technologies, and effective
teaching methods optimized for various learning styles. Scholars will
gain techniques for communication with and among students, and will develop
timely and appropriate activities to evaluate student progress, and measure
student learning, toward continually improving course quality.
