Consumer Health Information Specialization Program
Specialization levels
This program is divided into three levels of participation. The Level
I Non Health Sciences Librarians (Level I-NHSL) and Level I Health Sciences
Librarian (Level I-HSL) specializations are for those who desire a basic
familiarity with consumer health information resources. Level I requires
completion of twelve contact hours in at least three courses in separate
areas of knowledge.
The Level II specialization is for those who wish to gain additional
training in consumer health information. Obtaining this more advanced
level of specialization requires completion of twenty-four contact hours
in at least four courses in separate areas of knowledge.
Each level has been assigned a required number of MLA-approved CHIS hours,
which must accompany the application. Level I participants must have eight
of the required twelve hours in MLA-approved coursework. Participants
seeking the Level II specialization must have eighteen of the twenty-four
required hours in MLA-approved coursework.
