MLA Continuing Education Activities

CE Approval Application Directions

1. The Application for Approval: MLA Continuing Education Activity is the responsibility of the developer or instructor of the educational activity. This application should not be filled out by the sponsoring organization (MLA chapter, local consortium, etc.).

2. All items on the application must be completed to be considered for approval as a MLA CE course or educational activity. The related document, MLA Continuing Education Program and the section Criteria for Awarding MLA CE Contact Hours, provides important information for submitting a successful application.

3. The application and all accompanying materials must be submitted at least six weeks in advance of the presentation. A $45.00 late fee will apply for all applications received at MLA six weeks or less from the presentation date. Please note deadlines for Marketing information (see #11 below).

4. Fees: All applications must be accompanied by payment. Make check payable to Medical Library Association.

  • $75.00 MLA Members
  • $125.00 nonmembers
  • $175.00 institutional groups (vendors, hospitals, universities, etc.)
  • $0.00 NLM, Regional Medical Libraries, national professional library associations
  • $45.00 Late application fee for applications submitted less than 6 weeks prior to event.

5. If an educational activity is not approved, a $30.00 processing fee is withheld from the refund.

6. The approval will take effect at the time of approval of the activity and will be effective for one year from that date.

7. Approvals may be renewed by completing the Application for Renewal: MLA Continuing Education Activity.

8. For changes and additions that occur during the approval year, developers must send updated information to MLA.

9. MLA does not assign course numbers.

10. The MLA Continuing Education office maintains course evaluation results for classes held during the MLA National Annual Meeting. Course sponsors interested in locating CE courses with strong evaluation results may call MLA headquarters for assistance.

11. Marketing Guidelines

  • Marketing is offered only to developers with educational activities approved for MLA CE contact hours, if all requirements are met.
  • The MLANET Educational Clearinghouse will list the educational activity titles, instructor information, and a description of the activity. The MLA News lists dates, course titles, location, fees, instructor and contact information.
  • Any continuing education activity should be announced at least one month before the date of the course.

MLANET Educational Clearinghouse

  • Each educational activity title and instructor information is listed on the Clearinghouse for one year. To renew, complete the Application for Renewal: MLA Continuing Education Activity and pay the renewal fee.
  • The Clearinghouse will be updated monthly. A scheduled educational program can be added to the listing by notifying MLA in writing with the necessary information.

MLA News

  • For CE announcements to be listed in the MLA News, MLA must receive educational activity announcements by the first day of the month preceeding publication (e.g., if the educational activity is in April, the announcement should reach MLA by February 1 for inclusion in the March issue).
  • Allow an additional month for combined issues, published in June/July and November/December.

12. MLA Annual Meeting

  • If you have been asked to develop a course or if you want to apply for consideration to present your educational activity at a MLA national annual meeting, you will not need to submit a fee with the application. The application fee will be deducted from your honorarium if your activity is selected. On the application form, indicate "MLA Annual Meeting CE Course Proposal" when asked for the type of activity. Inclusion of the participant materials with the application is optional only when applying for the initial review deadline for teaching at the MLA Annual Meeting. The participant materials will need to be submitted to MLA by the date of the final course review.
