Our MLA 2017 Keynote Speakers Dream, Dare, Do

MLA 2017 is not short on accomplished people dreaming big, daring to take on challenges and doing their best to make a difference.

Julie Angus – McGovern Keynote

She rowed across the Atlantic, surviving a hurricane while in a rowboat. She and her husband travelled from the northern tip of Scotland to Syria using only human-powered amphibious rowboats. She sailed the ancient Phoenician trading routes, learning about the beginnings of the olive – a plant that’s shaped history. Julie is an accomplished adventurer, bestselling author, scientist, and a recipient of the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year award.

Patricia Brennan, RN, Ph.D – Leiter Lecture

Our new leader! Patricia Flatley Brennan is the director of the National Library of Medicine. Prior to that, she was the Lillian L. Moehlman Bascom Professor, School of Nursing and College of Engineering, at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Brennan received a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Hope Jahren, Ph.D – Closing Keynote

Acclaimed scientist Hope Jahren has built three laboratories in which she’s studied trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. Her first book is a revelatory treatise on plant life—but it is also so much more.  Lab Girl is a book about work, love, and the mountains that can be moved when those two things come together. It is told through Jahren’s remarkable stories: about her childhood in rural Minnesota with an uncompromising mother and a father who encouraged hours of play in his classroom’s labs; about how she found a sanctuary in science, and learned to perform lab work done “with both the heart and the hands”; and about the inevitable disappointments, but also the triumphs and exhilarating discoveries, of scientific work.
