Follow-Up to MLA ’17: Dare Dream Do: Content and Sessions on New and Emerging Technologies

MLA17_LOGO_300X300.jpgEditor’s note: Recent issues of the MLA News have featured recaps of some of the content and sessions presented at MLA ’17: Dream Dare Do, held in Seattle, WA. Our hope is that a brief overview of some of these sessions, technology showcases, posters, lightning talks, and more might continue some dialogue in this space, raise questions, or at least help you decipher those notes you scribbled during a presentation.

This recap focuses on the broad content topic of new and emerging technologies. Harold Bright IV, AHIP, moderator for one of the sessions on Monday, May 29, provides these notes and comments.

In Seattle, I moderated the session “Technology Dreamin’: New Applications for Current and Emerging Technologies.” Jamie Saragossi, Health Sciences Library, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY, presented a paper that described how rehabilitation students designed and printed, for credit, innovative devices based on patient needs. This involved a collaboration between a design school, which created the computer-assisted design (CAD) files, and the health sciences school students, who came up with the designs.

A team from University of Tennessee Health Sciences Library gamified student learning assessment, teaching students in an online graduate-level health informatics course about primary and secondary resources by creating an innovative game that improved scores and learning retention with several open source tools. Two additional papers explored using virtual reality (VR) in the library by setting up a VR experimentation station and interlacing a lay-controlled vocabulary into a specialized medical citation index, giving patients access to the latest research.

Lastly, “iPad Innovations During Clinical Rotations from Seven Medical Schools in the United States: Lessons Learned” gave several insights into iPad deployment in clinical environments. This paper was also published in the journal Medical Teacher.
