Clinical Reference Librarian

UAB Libraries at the University of Alabama–Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a faculty member to fill a unique position in the health sciences library branch located at UAB Hospital. This individual will be a member of a team that works in the clinical space with a variety of clienteles, including nurses, faculty clinicians, and medical residents. The incumbent will work closely with the Center for Nursing Excellence to support education, research, and patient care at all levels and through a variety of embedded activities, and must be comfortable working in a busy clinical environment. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the profession and to build a record of progressive scholarly and professional achievement. UAB Hospital is Alabama’s major tertiary care center, with the only comprehensive cancer center in a 5-state region. It is routinely ranked in US News and World Report’s Best Hospitals and Becker’s 100 Great Hospitals in America. UAB Hospital has over 1,000 medical residents and approximately 1,200 beds at 2 campuses. It is the only Magnet-designated hospital in the state of Alabama, and one of few hospitals in the country with 4 consecutive accreditations. Responsibilities include customized group and individual instruction, development of instructional materials and guides, research consultations, searching assistance, and point-of-use reference. The successful candidate will participate on library, hospital, and university committees.

Required: American Library Association–accredited master’s of library science (MLS) or equivalent, 1 or more years of professional experience in an academic health sciences library or a large teaching hospital library, excellent oral and written communication skills, strong public service orientation, flexibility, ability to manage projects and work independently, and demonstrated ability to interact well with varied clienteles and coworkers.

Preferred: Minimum 3 years’ professional experience in an academic health sciences library or a large teaching hospital library, demonstrated skill in interacting with adult learners, knowledge of evidence-based practice principles, and experience with supporting nursing activities. This position is located in the Lister Hill Library at University Hospital and reports to the clinical services librarian.

Salary: negotiable, dependent on qualifications, from $50,000. This is a non-tenure-track faculty position with academic rank at the time of appointment, dependent on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience.
