Warning: Beware of Housing Poachers
As you make plans to attend MLA '11, please be aware that some businesses are profiting handsomely at MLA's expense.
You may receive a phone, fax, or e-mail transmission that offers a “deal” on housing. The author's apparent intent is to mislead you that their offer is made on behalf of MLA. It is not. Don’t become the victim of a room block poacher who secured lists from websites and membership databases from the membership directories that associations produce.
Don't be misled! Official meeting hotels for the MLA annual meeting are the Hilton Minneapolis and the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis on Nicollet Mall. To make reservations see http://www.mlanet.org/am/am2011/travel/hotel.html or call the hotels directly and identify yourself as a Medical Library Association attendee. Be sure to ask for the MLA group rate.

Everyone loves a bargain. But poaching housing blocks is not about better prices—it’s about highly suspect ethics.
When MLA secures sleeping rooms at hotels for our conferences we do so in order to ensure attendees are adequately accommodated. We also need the hotels for meeting space for the meeting sessions. This involves contracting the rooms and space with hotels, but doing so exposes us to cancellation and attrition policies that, in some cases, could threaten our financial stability.
Please support MLA's official hotels and thwart room block poachers when making your housing arrangements. Here are a few companies (there could be more) that have contacted prospective attendees. None are affiliated with MLA and none have any discounted rooms within the MLA official housing block:
