This course examines the issues and principles of library space
planning for new, remodeled, and renovated library space. Guiding
principles for library design, what makes a great place, library
planning and technology trends, space planning formulas, adjacency
issues, and sustainable design for "green" libraries are
among the major issues reviewed. Emerging technologies, the impact
of electronic publishing on library space design, and social and
spatial boundaries and their implications for library design are
discussed. Other issues such as compact shelving, forces impacting
medical education, settings for hands-on learning, new types of
consultation points, information commons and learning commons characteristics,
new approaches to team settings, and teaching of users at point-of-need
are also explored.
