Hospitals-whether large or small, urban or rural, academic center or
community institution-have an interest in assuring both patient education
for improved outcomes and consumer health education for health promotion,
disease management, patient safety, and scientific literacy. Establishing
a comprehensive, hospital-based program that encompasses consumer health,
patient education, and community institutions presents unique challenges
and opportunities for collaboration and synergy to support existing clinical
entities and centers of excellence. This symposium will profile four hospital
programs that have successfully implemented effective collaboration between
patient education and consumer health libraries, with the aim of suggesting
implementation strategies to attendees in their own settings. The symposium
provides the opportunity for participants to showcase collaborative programs
that they have completed in their own libraries. Model collaborations
between hospital and public libraries will also be highlighted.
