This course introduces the training of basic
biomedical scientists in doctoral programs and the scientific method,
the nature of "research" in the basic sciences, and models
of teaching these concepts to future scientists. The course will
explain basic biomedical science disciplines (e.g., molecular biology,
biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, physiology, neuroscience,
immunology, and pharmacology), common research model organisms,
and technologies with major implications for the clinical sciences
that are emerging from the basic sciences. Biomedical research training
programs will be compared with the training of health care professionals,
with a focus on providing information services specifically for
research scientists. Following the course, attendees should have
an understanding of the biomedical education process for doctoral
programs and common research practices and resources. This knowledge
will help them tailor their services to the biomedical research
community at their home institutions.
