Some of the evidence we need to understand
our users is described best by words rather than by numbers. Qualitative
inquiry methods (case study, ethnography, grounded theory study,
phenomenological study and biography) use a variety of techniques
(including observation, interviews, focus groups, open surveys,
and information from documents or recordings) which we will explore
in this class. Lecture, discussion and exercises will include reliable
data gathering and analysis methods (both manual and computer assisted),
ethics, reports and the practical use of this research.
