Nursing and Allied Health Resources Section
Goal 1. Professional Development
- The Section is sponsoring an invited paper session at the 2000
Annual Meeting in Vancouver, BC, entitled, "Hedges/Filters
for Evidence-Based Literature", presented by Ann McKibbon,
McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada.
- The Section is also co-sponsor for two additional programs:
"Outreach to Public Health Professionals: Demystifying the
Dragon of Population-Based Service" with the Public Health/Health
Administration Section and Outreach SIG; and, "Walking Hand-in-Hand:
Consumer Health Advocacy" with the Consumer and Patient Health
Information and the Hospital Libraries Sections. Richard Barry,
Chair-Elect and Program Committee Chair planned all sessions.
- Seven members were awarded certificates upon completion of our
first Electronic Journal Club. Jody Guenther was the convenor
of the journal club.
Goal 2. Advocacy
- The Section’s "Globalization Initiative" has resulted
in the development of several partnerships being formed between
a current NAHRS member and an International member. Membership
Chair, Nelia C. Wurangian, is highlighting our global partnerships
in the Section newsletter.
- The Honors Committee, under the leadership of Barbara Schloman,
accepted nominations for the NAHRS Award for Professional Excellence.
A very deserving candidate emerged and will be honored at the
Annual Meeting in Vancouver. A call went out to receive notification
of any members who are retiring from the profession so that the
Section can acknowledge their contribution. Following a resolution
by the Executive Board, special recognition was sent to Anne Lippman
for her years of service as Archivist.
Goal 3. Organization
- The NAHRS newsletter has been published quarterly since the
1999 Annual Meeting. Articles have included The NAHRS History
by Esperanza Moreno, Nurses in Russia: the Next Step by Yelena
Friedman, and NAHRS with a New Latitude, by Nelia C. Wurangian.
June Levy is editor of the newsletter.
- The Strategic Planning Committee has published the first working
draft revision of the NAHRS Strategic Plan. Comments have been
sought from the membership. This document will be discussed at
the Section’s business meeting in Vancouver. Ysabel Bertolucci
chairs this committee.
- The Bylaws Committee has published revisions to the Section’s
bylaws. The revised bylaws will be discussed and acted on at the
Section’s business meeting in Vancouver. Janet Schnall chairs
this committee.
- Section Treasurer, Pamela Corley, has modified procedures for
approval of expenditures and financial commitments to enhance
the internal control systems recommended in MLA’s Section Finance
Manual.
- The election of officers and submission of mid-year and annual
reports were submitted according to the MLA deadlines for completion.
Goal 4. Research
- The Task Force to Map the Literature of Nursing has worked diligently
on the project. A poster highlighting the progress on this project
was selected for the Annual Meeting in Vancouver. Margaret (Peg)
Allen is Research Committee Chair. June levy is Chair of the project.
- The second series of articles from the Mapping of the Literature
of Allied Health Project was published in the July 1999 issue
of the Bulletin of the Medical Library Association. One
Phase 3 manuscript was submitted by Sheryl Stevens and accepted
for publication in the Bulletin of the Medical Library Association.
It provided an analysis of the literature of cytotechnology.
Goal 5. Information Technology
- The Website was reorganized slightly. An addition this past
year was to post the table of contents from the Section newsletter.
There is still a need to get more contributions of content by
officers and committee chairs.
