Collection Development Section
The following is a report of section activities for 1999-2000.
MLA Goal 1. Professional Development
- The section is co-sponsoring a contributed paper session at
the 2000 MLA Annual Meeting which is "Tracking the Gray Literature:
Capturing the elusive dragon, tracking the non-commercially published
literature and making it available" (co-sponsored with Public
Health/Health Administration, Research, and Technical Services).
It is also co-sponsoring an invited paper session entitled "Evidence
Based Librarianship - Tools we ALL can use: Part 1" (co-sponsored
with Research and Federal Libraries Sections). Both sessions are
scheduled for Sunday May 7, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Eric Albright is
the section’s program planner.
- The section is also co-sponsoring a Symposium on Electronic
Resources to be held at MLA on May 10. Collection Development,
Medical School Libraries, and Technical Services Section are the
sponsors. Anne Prussing serves as our section’s representative
on the Planning Committee. The section committed $1,000 to support
the Symposium.
MLA Goal 2. Advocacy
- Suzanne Porter chaired the Dan Richards Prize with members Ruth
Makinen and Carol Krueger. There will be not be a prize awarded
in 2000, because the nominees did not meet the established criteria.
MLA Goal 3. Organization
- Officers for 2000-2001 are BJ Schorre, Chair-Elect; Naomi Fackler,
Secretary and Treasurer; and Jett McCann, Section Council Representative-Elect.
Jon Eldredge is the section’s candidate for the MLA Nominating
Committee. Virginia Lingle chaired the Nominations Committee and
was assisted by Frances Chen. Naomi Fackler, Treasurer, reported
a balance of $6,233. Marjorie Smink, chair Membership Committee,
wrote welcome letters to new members and worked with committee
member BJ Schorre to develop a membership brochure. It will be
distributed at the annual meeting. Brenda Collins, our Section
Council Alternate resigned effective November, 1999. An alternate
was appointed for the 2000 meeting. Frances Chen was the Governmental
Relations Committee Liaison.
MLA Goal 3. Communication
- Michelle Shipley, editor of the newsletter, Developments, published
and distributed the two issues, Fall 1999 and Spring 2000. The Fall
issue contained a survey of members regarding electronic distribution
of the newsletter. A majority of respondents indicated a desire to move
to an electronic format. The proposal will be decided at the annual
meeting in Vancouver. The electronic newsletter, BLAB, was produced
twice this business year. Eric Albright is editor and also serves as
Web master for the section’s Website
- He also set up an electronic list that is available to distribute
information to all members.
MLA Goal 4. Research
- Collection Development Section will co-sponsor the Research
Section's program "Evidence-Based Librarianship: Tools We
ALL Can Use, Part 1" which will include a paper on cohort studies
that uses book and journal use studies as examples. Also see Goal
2.
MOTION
This report is informational and requires no action by the Board
of Directors.
