Health Administration Section
Goal 1. Profession Development
The Public Health/Health Administration (PH/HA) Section is co-sponsoring
three programs and one symposium at the 2001 Annual Meeting of the Medical
Library Association. The section committed $1,000 to support the symposium.
The travel medicine program planners, Richard Klein and Helen Look, raised
$500 (in addition to the funding from co-sponsoring sections and SIGs)
to support the travel medicine invited speaker program.
The three programs are entitled:
I. "Core Competencies for Librarians in Informatics- Intensive Environments"
(contributed papers) Medical Informatics (lead sponsor), Public Health/Health
Administration (co-sponsor), Leadership and Management, Medical Library
Education
II. "Medicine for International Travel: State of the Art, 2001" (invited
paper) Public Health/Health Administration (lead sponsor), Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual
Transgendered SIG, Federal Libraries, International Cooperation, Consumer
& Patient Health Information, Pharmacy & Drug Information, Rehabilitation
Hospital SIG
III. "To Boldly Go Where No Information Has Gone Before"-Delivering
Health And Information To Rural Communities Using Telemedicine (contributed
papers) International Cooperation (lead sponsor), Public Health/Health
Administration (co-sponsor)
The symposium is entitled:
I. "Library Partnerships - Powerful Connections" Consumer Health and
Patient Health Information, International Cooperation and Public Health/Health
Administration Sections and the Outreach SIG PH/HA and the Medical Informatics
Section have jointly sponsored an electronic journal club on public health
informatics.
PH/HA Newsletter/Web Editor Kris Alpi coordinated the three sections
of thirty participants. A Web page on public health informatics resources
has been developed and made available on the PH/HA Website.
Goal 2. Advocacy
A revised section brochure is being developed and will be distributed
at the 2001 Annual Meeting. The Membership Chair, Newsletter Editor, and
Section Chair are streamlining the process for adding new members to the
sectionUs listerserv and announcing the new members in the sectionUs newsletter.
A new section logo is being designed and will eventually be incorporated
into the sectionUs Website, brochure, and section quilt piece for the
MLA quilt. Goal 3. Organization A slate of candidates were proposed and
voted on for election for 2001/02.
Goal 4. Research
PH/HA is supporting a "Core Public Health Journal Project." The purpose
of the project is to identify a list of core public health journals that
should be in all libraries serving public health organizations in any
or all of the specialty areas covered. The list should assist libraries
and faculty in selecting journals for purchase and in evaluating their
own collections. Chair-Elect Matt Wilcox and Stephanie Normann are currently
coordinating the project.
Goal 6. Information Technology
The sectionUs Web based newsletter publicizes public health and health
administration issues important to section members. An ongoing Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) column has been developed.
MOTION
This report is informational and requires no action by the Board of
Directors.
