Annual Report 2000/01

Medical Library Education Section

Goal 1. Professional Development

a. MLES is again sponsoring its New Perspectives session at the 2001 Annual Meeting. The program is entitled "Embarking on the Odyssey," with five contributed papers by recent graduates, current students, and current fellows/trainees. This is an opportunity for younger colleagues to present a paper at an annual meeting. Twelve abstracts were reviewed; five were selected by a jury of MLES officers. The individuals chosen to present have been offered small travel stipends by MLES to defray the costs of attending the annual meeting.

b. MLES will also be cosponsoring a session, with the Medical Informatics, Public Health/Health Administration, and Public Services sections, entitled "Core Competencies for Librarians in Informatics-Intensive Environments."

Goal 2. Advocacy

a. The 2001 LIS School Reunion will be held during the annual meeting. This session is held each year to give MLA members at the Annual Meeting a chance to meet with library school faculty and colleagues from both current and "dead" library and information science schools. The reunion provides an opportunity for establishing and maintaining a link between graduates and their schools.

b. The section established an unmoderated electronic discussion list, using Yahoogroups as the host. A electronic group address for the section officers is also available.

Goal 3. Organization

a. The section Website continues to expand to provide information to members of the section, to students interested in health librarianship, and to MLA members interested in medical library education. It was moved this year from the server at the New York Academy of Medicine to MLANET; the Section's Secretary-Treasurer continues as the exceptionally-able Web editor.

The Website contains the following areas:
